My experience is that buckwheat planted in warm soils is very frost sensitive. In contrast, buckwheat that volunteers in the spring (or is planted in the early spring) seems to be more cold hardy.

I would be very surprised if buckwheat planted on 9/3 in MN sets any viable seed. It normally takes at least 6 weeks for viable seed to be produced.
