NC | There are some places that can grow a calf on just pasture/small grains; and still have them be yearlings.
Its amazing how much weight the mountain boys can put on with no supplements during the spring summer and fall. The calves are right too, lots of frame. They used to just buy them from the sales and turn them loose. Lots of room and fresh grass kept their deathloss low.
Most started preconditioning the calves before turning them out- mostly because they have been forced into buying earlier(before the grass is ready) just to get their hands on enough of them. And when the price of calves shot up they couldn't absorb the higher death loss as well. I am sure there are still a few calves up there in the fall that have never seen a bunk.
I would never assume a calf has been preconditioned or bunk broke.
