| The higher the voltage, the less critical voltage drop is.
Typically you wish for less than 3% voltage drop in the wire because that's enough to raise the motor current and make the motor run hotter and all the energy lost in the wire is energy paid for at the meter but not delivered to the load.
There two practical limits on going oversize for the wire, cost and the connecting lugs on the circuit breaker and motor starter, and maybe room on the motor connection box. The fatter the wire the better the system efficiency.
Last I looked there were voltage drop formulas and tables in the National Electrical Code.
