Urban rumor as far a bullet ricocheting. A .22 or shotgun will handle them easily.
I would do as you suggest and shoot them in the hopes to keep the populations from starting.
Armadillos can carry leporacy. My professor said there was one population in LA that up to 12% of population had Leprocy. That cured me from handling them ever again.
