Death comes to us all. Life's but a walking shadow
While no doubt substantial benefit accrues to downstream businesses and the greater society, it's not so clear how that directly benefits the property owners or grain producers, especially in light of the high property taxes. Maybe Nebraska and the local governments owe you people money.
My argument is that you need to make sure you're getting your money's worth for that water. There was a story in the news not long ago about a former cattle ranch in Arizona purchased by some Saudi investors for little of nothing. They promptly converted it to irrigated alfalfa which they harvest & ship to Saudia Arabia to feed dairy cows. The problem is they are pumping all the ground water out, including all their neighbor's for some 50-100 sq. miles around. Essentially they are mining and shipping water to Saudia Arabia that won't be replaced for centuries, if ever. Meanwhile, their neighbors will eventually need to move away for the lack of water.
