Elvaston, IL
Joel,

I graduated from WIU in '05 with a BS in ag science and in '07 with a MBA in finance. I loved Dr. Roskamps courses. Growing up on a farm, I felt the ag classes were very good, and they reinforced a lot of what I'd learned at home. The Ag Dept provided an opportunity for me to travel to Brazil and ultimately work there, but for me personally, I'd have to say grad school, where I received the finance degree has had a pivotal impact on my life. Understanding simple principles about interest and investing amongst many other things, has benefited me greatly. I think many farmers love to farm, and they're very good at the production side of farming. But when it comes to record keeping, cost per acre, cost per bushel, etc. there's quite a lack of understanding. The numbers are seen as the necessary evil, not like the enjoyable production side.

I would encourage any child, or parent who's sending their child to an Ag school, to take some Ag business and/or finance classes to help them understand the business side of production Ag.
