| Tried most all systems back in the day. What I found was the more you broke the seal,,the more tillage done the more moisture you lose. Not an issue for you eastern guys who run tile everywhere any way. HERE_ we were lucky to get 1/3 to 1/2 your rainfall. Try growing in a desert and you quickly learn to KEEP every drop you get. Neighbor used to come over in a very dry year and say I did everything right and didnt harvest 1/3 of yours across the fence. hE DID ABOUT 3 TILLAGE PASSES and I did zero,,,who conserved what they were given and who left it go and hoped for more on time,,,which may or may not happen.
I can recall LOTS of years where we got not a drop from first of June till well into August and September. Best rains we had were humidity and dew.
The other real issues were spots in field with a mucky cloddy texture that didnt allow germ where too much air dried out seed.(seed to soil contact). Other major issue was erosion on steep hills,,,those hills held plowing scars from past 100 years where no top soil remained. We quit having to combine thru washed out gullies when we quit making them. | |
