Thumb of Michigan
The purpose of knocking stalks down is to prevent excessive damage to tires in the spring and possibly incorporate cover crop seed in the fall. Just to give a little more info. We have tried 7.5", 15", twin row 30"(I like twin rows for a little faster canopy) and now 30". White mold can be a serious issue here with heavy dews in the morning that can last till noon or longer. The reason for switching to 30" is to allow air seeding a cover crop at leaf drop. I have a 16 row JD 1770NT planter. I have tried driving over the stalks in the spring, but noticed a lot of tire wear from the stalks.
