This has always been odd to me. Our county as a whole as applied fert in the spring since well the early eighties. Mostly with planters till recently. Now mostly broadcast. That all said manure gets applied when it can ant that isnt much different. I do think the more residue you have the better. And better yet throw some seed in with the fert. A bu of wheat is like 4 bucks and gunna run spreader anyhow. But we farm 4 to 6 inches o topsoil so take it for what's its worth. All areas are different
