Just a freak of nature I think, affects some hybrids more than others. Mycogen, when we used to grow it, used to have this quite a bit. Don't see it as often with Dekalb and Pioneer, Crazy top, which is something different usually shows up where plants were submerged in water and dirty/muddy water gets into the whorl.
