Washington, Kansas & Lincoln, Nebraska | My message center displays "cleaning exhaust filter" at various intervals depending on what's happened during that driving cycle. As has been said it is burning accumulated carbon out of the DPF (diesel particulate filter).
I've never seen "Emptying Exhaust Valve" so I'm not sure if you misquoted what it said or if that's something different.
I have 37,000 miles on mine and the fuel economy has not changed significantly from new. You can blame the EPA for all this.
