Usually 8-10 cores in a sample. I try to take them in a 100ft radius of the "sample point" to get a good average for the area. Take them before any tillage is done, much easier on your body and you get better samples.

I like to "zig zag" my points across the grid to reduce the chance of all your points being in the same spreader/manure/planter pass....these can and will effect your results and if all samples are taken in the same spreader pass your results may not be representative and you won't have any way of knowing it.

There are many different ways of soil sampling and laying your grids, everyone has their own preference. Most importantly consider it a snap shot and not an exact science.
