Coochief Actually the gear on the C5 is in the "crosswind landing mode". Had that on some old Cessna 140-170-180 & Stinson models. The C5 can land & TO in up to 100 kt direct cross winds with the gear like that, though it's often thrilling for the crew having to watch out their side windows on in those cases...... C5 crews, if you're reading...please do NOT attempt...it's a joke! C5 engineers probably stole that idea from the old Curtiss engineers that used it on the P40. Note Clay's photo of the P40 shows the gear nestled in it's wing bay sideways also. They go thru a similar 90 degree turn when retracting, but then take up less room in the wing, in the case of the P40. I've always thought the round lines of the P40 far more beautiful than a P51, though a much older plane. |
