Probably going to get it wrong because of memory, but it was explained to me a few years ago.There are x amount of positive and x amount of negative ions in water,adding the AMS gives you one more negative ion for the chemical to attach itself to giving you better action with your herbicide.
I don't remember who told me that and it may be completely wrong, but it sounds good.
