I want to start this out in saying, we use it already and will most likely continue to toss it in every load.
Of all the internet searching, I cant find actual science behind why it works. We all know its the band-aid fix for hard water as per this link.
It fixes the problems with the carrier (water), what if we would fix those though other means does that eliminate the need for AMS? Say we use a RO system to get "pure" H2O do plants like that water more then "normal" water? If so why? What if we add in AMS regardless to Pure water, does this further increase herbicide activity, at what margin do we get to diminishing returns? Basic question is why does AMS work in such a range of products?
