| My Dad has done it 8 times now. By far the biggest thing is to make sure all the crews are scheduled to show up on time. Every day somebody shows up late is another day that it is gonna take to get the project done. Throw in some weather delays and your not going to save any money.
Concrete is the easy part in Minnesota, you need to have an engineered plan and can use that to check the crew that there not cutting any corners. If you have building experience go for it. If not I wouldn't. All anyone wants to do is cut corners to make them selves more money. You need to be at the site daily to watch. Things happen fast and if you miss something it's just gonna cost you down the road.
The same could be said about a bad general contractor who just gets bids and doesn't babysit. There is allot more to it than just finding who will do it for the least money and throwing a percentage on top.
