Southwest Missouri | In high school, my town friends who flipped burgers saw that my brother and I made twice what they made. A few came out and tried it. They got "pooped" as one guy said after a few hours. They seldom came back. One guy did. We insulted his manhood when we were tired. He was and still is such a competitive person (valedictorian, star athlete then and high powered banker today, not the guy whose bank was robbed the other day) that he just gritted his teeth and worked even harder. That meant we did not have to work as hard. We still have a good laugh about those days :).
I have good memories of those days, but NO desire to do it again. We do big squares, but big rounds work best for most people.
Small squares will get you more dollars per acre selling hay here if you can get them hauled. If, and this is purely theoretical as it will never happen, I needed to sell hay to make a living, I might go small squares if I had a bale wagon.
Edit: As I read this last paragraph, I see it may sound condescending to hay producers. That was not my intent at all. I like putting up hay and tried to cultivate a local market, but people here wanted to buy a "bale" of hay (regardless of quality of the hay, the size of the bale, weight, stored inside or not, etc.) for the lowest price they saw advertised. I gave it up and just put up the hay we need and sell only the surplus if I can find the right buyer at the right price.
