My personal belief is they help keep the wind out of the engine compartment. The wind will take the heat out of the engine area and possible, without that heat, contribute to fuel gelling. I run with mine when it's 20° F or colder and windy . . . . As posted, pretty easy to obtain, Ebay or craigslist or posted above . . .
