Subject: RE: Pipeline Update

Iowa
We ran new tile lines parallel to the pipelines every 25 - 30 feet and only crossed the pipelines with mains in the low areas.  This minimized the number of pipeline crossings.  The pipeline people have to be there when the work is done.  Their heavy equipment crushed the old lines, especially in the temporary easement area.  The clay subsoil was really compacted to depths well below the frost line.  Even with all the new tile, there can be a lot of yield loss on the easement area during any year that is a little too wet or too dry.  It still shows up 30 years later.  Hopefully your soil types are not as succeptable to the damage from deep compaction.  Our pipelines seem to get dug up every few years for repairs.  At least they've been able to make repairs without disturbing the parallel drainage lines.  I'm not sure if the parallel lines would work in your situation.  The lay of your land is no doubt different, and terraces would probably complicate the situation.  Good luck.  It usually takes some time to get the drainage issues worked out.
