Central IL
I work for a Garage Door company, and I personally have changed at least 25 in the last 2 weeks. Check the Top "bearing" for slop too and fix if needed(I think nylon gear runs about $25 and the complete assembly runs $35). Grease is vital. I have seen first hand what happens if you don't grease them. We had a customer replace one on his own, and didn't bother to grease it. 2 weeks later it was totally gone again. They seem to last typically 8 years or so on the average. This kind of stuff is what I do and its keeping us BUSY!! I agree, that the nylon gear is meant to be the weak link, kind of like a shear pin.
