Subject: Re: Ultrashift, Freedomline and Autoshift Transmissions

Wheatley, Arkansas

We had a 18210C-AS2 in a Volvo 670, after it started giving electrical trouble we pulled it out and had it rebuilt as a manual shift. There are several mid sized fleets around here with the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Auto shifters that are changing over to manual shifters once problems begin showing up.

It seems like electronics and the X-Y shift guide are the main problems guys are having around here. My understanding is that each new generation of auto shift tranny is tremendously better than the previous one.

Auto shifters may eventually take the market from the manual shifters but I think it will be quite some time before that happens. We looked at a Freedomline 2 pedal system and didn't like the way it jerked and lurched at low speeds.

As far as the dealer pushing the A/S rigs,,,,,,,,,does he have more of them than manual shifters? The only reason we bought the A/S truck we had was because it was more than enough less money to pay for the change over if required. A/S trucks are 3-5K less around here than manual shifters.
