Subject: RE: Tropical storm number nine

Faunsdale, AL
Seems like it was 2004 when we had a lot of corn in the field (for us it was a lot!) and the tropics got really active. Seemed like every few days another tropical storm would spin up out in the gulf and come up through the Southeast. Had an old 95 combine in the shed that I was eying, but it would have taken longer to get it going than we would have gained by using it. Couple of storms went other directions, but one, I think it was Ivan, was headed through here.

We hurried through harvest, cut a lot of corn at higher moisture than we normally would and filled every bin to the top. Got down to the last 30 acres and couldn't get through it because of morning glories. Didn't have any room for it in a bin anyway, guess we could have sold it.

When the storm had passed we got a plane in to spray the vines and then let them dry down a couple weeks before we went in and cut it. In the end it would have been better to just get out a disk instead of spraying the vines and combining. Took forever to try to get it up and since we were feeding to dairy cows, the mold and damage from being wet was a big concern.

Only thing good that came out of it was some good dove hunts! Oh! ...........and we would have been in a drought if it weren't for the several storms! Sometimes that's what it takes to get August and September rains here.
