Ontario | yep it's important to rotate, i'm planning for about 55 acres of wheat. it's two fields which are the only ones i have any real road travel to get to and the one(45 acres) has a few tiles that need to be fixed so i'll get those done once the wheat comes off. the other i'm only putting wheat in because i don't really want to put beans in it again and have to make the 45-60 min trip with all the equipment just for 10 acres.
the prices i got from the coop for seed, chemicals and fertiliser came out to about $150 per acre and soft red winter wheat is currently $4.79. assuming a 70bu yield(would hope for 80) i can expect to make about $185 per acre so there's still some profit, not a lot but some. also another factor with wheat is that you can keep some seed to replant so future costs would be much lower. if you have a buyer for straw that would really help too but personally i'll just do a few bales for my own use and let the combine spread the rest | |
