I don't mean to sound like a smart..., but if this is what the 80's was like I don't see what all the fuss is about. Sure, we are in a price slump in basically all sectors of Ag, but it's nothing that won't pass, and I'm sure another slump will follow this one sooner or later. Now I would never wish bad fortune on anyone, however I feel like this reality check is good for us all in order to realign the way we do business as far as expenses, diversifying, marketing etc. Personally, I have mixed emotions about it as I am trying to build my farming enterprise up to become full time someday. A slump in the markets allows me to fill lots at a cheaper cost than when wet calves were 400 plus. I can also better compete in the land market as well. Im really not making a ton of money, but I have a very good full time job to pay my other bills, so I am very fortunate in that respect and feel bad for those of you who's livelihoods rely on these wacko market swings. I am currently working on expanding my freezer beef sales as well, in which I average $1.50 live weight for steers, so I have some protection from the swings as well. Sorry for the rambling and I hope I didn't offend anyone, just playing the devil's advocate here a little while trying to show you there is some good that comes from times like these.
