Here's where I have a problem with the story....

It is my understanding that if they were using an unlabeled product on an experimental basis,  the crop yield from that field - the pasture in this case - would have to be harvested and discarded. It could not be used.  So, why would a farmer allow a product to be sprayed on a pasture when he could not harvest/ graze the grass from it.   I could be wrong, but that is my understanding how it works. 

That is what makes the story suspect to me.
