Subject: Electric motors, how to diagnose?

SW KS, near Dodge City
Got an electric motor on our air compressor that's acting up. I don't know diddly about electric motors... So, when it's under load it sounds like it's "running rough" (best description I can give) and I can see some sparks (blue-ish colored, pretty sure they're electrical) in the motor casing, close to the coils. When I take the belt off it runs smooth and no sparks. Should I take it into the electric shop to have it worked on, or just buy another one?
