Dwight IL | Range on the Phantom 2 is somewhat the same as the range on the phantom 3. (ive had and flown both). The phantom 2 vison (wifi connected) is much shorter but may be perfect for you for using as a toy as you said in your post. The limiting factor on the p2 is usually the quality of video transmission you have back to whatever kind of fpv you have. I highly suggest you get some really good antennas for the screen and the ship to get the best video transmission you can.
Gopro vs built in camera Plus and Minuses IMHO:
Gopros are great. they can be easily used on the drone for some great video and stills.
Pros:
Easy to replace if damaged, but are very stout.
You can take the camera off and use it for anything else.
Cons:
To get really good pics, you should have it mounted on a gimbal, which is costly and will be the weak point of your system.
They have fish eye lenses distorting the pic a bit.
Built in cameras are great, they offer some some great shots as well, with a much flatter lens than the gopro.
Pros:
Strong gimbals, great pics. They come with their own built in gimbal.
Flat(er) lenses with little distortion
Cons:
They are dedicated to the ship. You cannot remove the camera and use it for other things.
I hope this helps. Im sure you would be happy with either the p2 or the p3 but keep in mind that the p3 has a better software package using the ipad/tablet for fpv and flight controls. For the same $, I would encourage you to get a p3 over a p2 anyday.
