nw pa
number of rows determined at v 6 stage. so in order to increase the plant needs full attention at that stage. In order to do that ,spring pre-plant planter fertilizer or whatever it takes to make a happy plant. Much is also determined by genetic's. Some plants just won't do it.
What we like to do is check the plants that you know are getting everything, Ends of the fields. corners where some plants will be in the best of situations without close neighbors. If they aren't up to your standards then the rest of the field won't be either. Once you find the genetic's it's a matter of geting the right conditions for development. Sometimes you can sometimes you can't. It's a battle that is sometimes not worth fighting. That same racehorse that will run 18 or 20 rows in the best areas may drop to 14 in the others. 16 rows overall doesn't sound so bad then.
Still it's always something to strive for.
