Near-north Ontario, French River
While I agree that owning your own rig is probably money in your pocket, your comparison isn't exactly apples to apples.
Does your spray pull itself through the field or are you pushing it? You have to include the cost of the tractor, or at least allocate a portion of the cost of the tractor, that pulls the sprayer. What about your time spent spraying? At your scale you probably don't use support equipment like tenders, but the big operations run semi's with tankers and dedicated drivers... that's a cost that has to be accounted for. A big cost for custom app guys is insurance, are you fully covered if you drift onto your neighbours? Often times, custom applicators are subject to much higher regulation, hours of service for operators, equipment standards etc,,, that all add cost that farm operators don't have. I sit on a co-op board, and as much as some customers would like to believe the custom app is a cash cow for the co-op , its not. Margins are tight, and one screw up ( and WE ALL DO IT , not just the co-ops like some would have you believe), can erase the profits from a days , or even a months worth of spraying.
