West River, SD | Annual weeds are the first step in ecosystem succession. The perennials slowly fill in where the weeds were growing. Most crop production could be considered the first step, I guess. With a crop rotation, it is usual to see different weeds with different crops, even if the weed hasn't been seen in the field for a while. Having a huge flush of weeds that produce seed is not a good thing, but weed seed is a normal thing. Even doing deeper than normal tillage can bring up all sorts of weed seed. | |
