I was about to post that I would have thrown the fire at them with a sprayer as opposed to mowing them, but it looks like that's in your plan.

Don't let the grandstanders get under your skin. If they legitimately cared about you as a person they'd have said something like "you might touch base with your landowner, around here, that could be a bad visual." rather than "BLAR BLAR BLAR lazy kids."

You have to do what you think is best. I've done more walking fields than most, and I've never had good luck with hoeing really thick stuff. I'd have probably tried to run my hooded sprayer or cultivate it first, but if you didn't get any chemical down, I'd have probably terminated the whole thing also.
