I'm in NE Iowa and like to maximize my tonnage per acre with a similar type mix. I like to apply this mix to every acre after both first and third cutting:
85# of DAP (18-46-0)
250# of potash (0-0-60)
15# of Elemental Sulfur
1.5# of actual boron
I shoot for 6.5+ tons per acre per year and this is not much more than removal rates. Hay uses a lot of fertilizer.
+1
I use a little different mix but the same nutrients. I use Cal-sul for the sulfur source.
I'm amazed at how many people grow crappy alfalfa. It cost just as much in land, cutting, raking, seed and what ever else to grow crappy hay as it does good hay.
I don't even pay super close attention to soil tests with hay. You take X off you need to put X back on and with today's fertilizer prices it's not a good time to mine it. |
