Mid-Michigan | I've never ever known anyone around us to grow hard red wheat but maybe. To answer your question: no, not much profit this year. I really needed to know last september what the market was now to make a little better decision on how many acres I planted (my crystal ball broke last year). We raise soft white wheat. To raise 100 bu. what you have to spend a lot of money. I take pride in growing good wheat. I am sticking with our 3 crop rotation. I can't outguess the markets. I like having a crop harvested now (July). I can soil test. I can deep rip when it does the most good (dry). I can spread potash. I can pick stones. I can have manure spread. I can use a different mode of action to kill weeds. I seem to have little issues that guys who raise the same continuous crop (weird fungus', bugs etc.) It has benefits to me even when I don't make much money. | |
