Subject: Lew Spring wheat

Montana
When I came to this ranch to work with my father in Law, in 1980 we had drought years when we cut our bearded wheat for hay. We were able to save our cows but we got lumps in the jaws of some cows as a result of the beards and cutting wheat a bit too dry.

When I took over in the 90s, I bought Fortuna and Lew and they were very similar, solid stem and beardless. They both grew very tallin wet years and yioeld very good for grain and wonderful for hay.

I have asked seed companies about Lew and nobody seems to know anything about it. I think we only have one certified Fortuna grower left in Montana and I got seed from a dealer at Fairfield Montana last spring.

I would sure like to find a source for Lew and Fortuna and a beardless winter wheat called Cimmeron. I have seed that grows about 80 percent beardless cimmeron but it is reverting back to beards.

I plant and hay a lot of Willow Creek and I like it but the grain yield is about the third of a good grain wheat or even the old Cimmeron.
