Subject: RE: Cover crop after wheat?

pat-michigan - 7/19/2016 20:53 We were using carry over (returned or unsold) group 4 to 5 soy seed for cover crops for a couple of years. Kind of a long story, but we could source them very cheap as they were treated. Couldn't go to the elevator, generally couldn't be sold the next year, so they had to be landfilled otherwise. No chance of us ever getting them to harvest here, so it was a win win for everyone I guess. I think there was some value there to planting them. Especially compared to planting nothing. Maybe a little N credit, but I wouldn't bank on it I guess. We really liked them (or any broadleaf cover for that matter) after wheat if corn was to be planted the following year. Something else that was a plus was that we felt we were getting enough growth that it aided in breaking down the wheat stubble. I seemed to struggle with planting darn near anything into wheat stubble the following year without having some issue- slugs mainly. Anything I could do to create the environment to get the stubble toned down was a real plus. I was also kind of sort of worried about creating some potential issues with stuff like nematodes. Guess I asked enough people that I trusted concerning that potential that I don't think there were a lot of real danger to using soy as a cover. Probably no more than the guys south of me who can usually get a double crop in. If your carry over seed is RUR, I'd plant that only and keep the option of spraying open. If not, it would be a great time to experiment with some mixes. I like radish over clover, but I like almost anything over clover.

If a person grows soybeans as a cash crop in their rotation, I certainly wouldn't be using them as a cover crop.
