If the well has a metal casing and has been in the water for several years, there is a good chance that the strainer is rusted. It may be bad enough that it has holes in it which will cause the well to pump gravel and sand. A completely new well with new casing is the only solution if that is the case. The strainer could also be stopped up. This would cause the well to surge during pumping. A barrel of acid might open it back up but no guarantees. Bottom line you could put a new well in the old casing and end up having to pull it back out and drill a new hole with new casing. We started putting down wells in the early 1970's. Our well driller told us that in our area 30 years is the most we can expect for a well. We have had to drill 2 new wells in the last couple of years. We use plastic casing now so corrosion will not be a problem.
