That is one thing that some prime Illinois dark soil types struggle with on the k issue. They will soak up potash like a sponge; trying to load your base sat to 3-4% is tough financially. I think banding could help tremendously with that by keeping the higher concentration from being tied up.


The problem with banding K is:. In the fall the K is in the residue and will be broadcasted. So the band only lasts 1 season. These low k soils need too much k to band it all without a salt issue.

I like topdress potash for these soils to prevent a shortage in the plant.

It takes good calcium levels to get k into the plant. 60% min 65% is better.

Potash is getting cheaper right along now with big supplies and low demand. $220/ ton now. A good opportunity to apply several hundred pounds cheap.
