Subject: RE: "Snake Oil"?

Lancaster, OH
Good post, Chris. That article is very good. Operating with product inputs that are not regulated based on performance, I'm quite familiar with the "snake oil" term. I've seen lots of products with grand claims and the proof is a testimonial from a farmer who put it on one field that did better than the field in which he did not.

Having sold seed, chemistries and, now, biologicals, I understand the value of extensive, replicated testing. I agree with his claim about doing your own testing but I believe that it should be balanced with the replicated testing I reference above. If a product has shown an advantage across replicated testing across a state, that has more weight to me than a side-by-side or two that I might do on my own farm. Very often, products show advantages 60% of the time making it hard to determine with hard facts with one or two tests.

Really good post. Thanks.
