Did you notify him the cows were out and do everything you could to mitigate the damage in the meantime?
What are the fence laws in Nebraska?
Is he actually legally responsible for damage they did? If he's not then he'd be smart to get his insurance company involved so they could tell you that instead of him having to tell you that.
