North Central Illinois | 1 & 2 are planted at 36.5K on 5/26 with 1 ton/acre pelleted poultry litter spread in late March. Final population around 31k Litter was 4-3-2, but I figure only about 50 lb/acre N available first year. This is first year organic ground. Previous 2 years in alfalfa. Plowed down in November after grazing off regrowth.
3 is the same variety planted at 34K on 5/19. Final population around 26K. Was wheat last year under seeded with red clover. Plowed down this spring about a week prior to planting. Was supposed to have 2.5 tons of 4-3-2 compost applied also at plowdown, but the supplier sent a truck that was loaded with a mix of compost and fresh wet layer manure with piles of fresh dead hens on top. So I refused the load. Couldn't get anything else on short order, so I just did a low N test plot. Lower leaves are firing and it is about to tassel. Gonna lose some yield, but at least it's only 10 acres.
4 is the same field as 3, the edge 6 rows were planted a week later, as I needed to take the fence out between it and the wheat I was grazing out ahead of soybean planting.
5 and 6 planted at 36.5k on 5/20. Final population around 24k, but it's variable from 16-30k. Weed pressure here is tremendous, as this is long term organic ground that was also used as cattle dry lot in the 80's and 90's and often allowed to grow up in weeds. Better to hoe the dickens out of the stand than grow a solid stand of velvet leaf. Was Wheat last year with a mix of oats, Winfred brassica, berseem clover and crimson clover drilled July 30. The clovers were choked out by the rest of the mix. Covers were grazed off in late October. 2 tons 4-3-2 pelleted litter applied in late March.
5 is a 95 day number and 6 is 107 day.
