Concordia,Kansas | Loyalty and RESPECT are two way streets. I think your looking down a one way street here. I would like to know the other side of the story on this? What`s the landlord`s story?
Was the tenant doing his BEST job for the farm and his landlord? Or was he off taking care of his own ground and another landlord when he NEEDED to be on this farm? Was the rent raised to the point that it was fair for both people?
There are just too many unanswered questions here to make a judgment call about loyalty or respect.
If you rent ground from someone, especially on shares, then you have a REAL obligation to that landlord. You need to be on that ground as soon as possible, if you have more than one, rotate every year. But, always do the farms that someone is banking on you first!!!!
You need to show them, and their farm the respect that you wish in return. I still have one farm that is on shares, we are there as soon as we possibly can. If I have to pick up and move because that farm is ready to go it`s just what needs to be done. I wish it was a cash rent farm, but my family has farmed for his family for five generations, and he says we will keep doing it this way. So I respect that. When we had the tornados this spring, we got hit about 9:30 P M. The news was his house should`ve got hit about 10:30 p m. I made sure everyone was alright here, then I was gone 94 miles to his house to check on them and make sure we didn`t need to help there first. I return the loyalty and respect he shows me.
The farms that chase the dollar will come and go. If you notice most change hand every time a contract is up. If you want to pay that game you get what you get.
