Pilot has more to do with it all than really anything else. Listening to the story of the pilot and the up draft and making a wider pass... I wouldn't hire that clown to spray my garden..... Applicators like him give the good ones a bad name.
Helicopters typically fly slower for aerial application work, depends on which aircraft they are using. Honestly Helicopters are a niche in the application world, they have uses for really tight areas and wouldn't understand why they would be doing large acreage. Reason being the operating cost is much higher than a fixed wing aircraft and they carry less product. Go with the fixed wing unit... you will be just as happy with it as anything. Find someone that has a good reputation, does good work and stick with him. Maybe he can even do your cover crop work if he is set up with a spreader and knows how.
