Radville, SK | My dad has told me that back probably close to 40 years now, they used to harrow several times after seeding wheat to kill the wild oats as the wheat could handle being hit with a harrow and the wild oats would die due to where the growth point was located. If they timed this correctly, wild oats were never a problem the rest of the year. Now we have flushes of wild oats that will start all year long with no end in sight.
So over the 30 years of doing this method of farming, we've genetically selected the wild oats that were predisposed towards having a summer long germ cycle. | |
