I'm thinking a fine textured clay soil will hold 4" per foot.

That half of that is available.

That when soil moisture gets lower than 50%, plants become stressed and will never reach full potential.

I doubt your sand can hold over 1/2" available.

And the gravel a tad.

We're 'east slope' so dry winds take a lot.

I'm not going to say "here"---as I tend to talk about where I'm at and crops I got, not where I ain't not growing stuff I don't have.
