"Here" we tend to put on .5"-.7" per pass and timing is by what the crop tells us it needs and the parameters of the field (soil type, GPM of the wells). Most of our soil around here can't hold much over an inch of water in the top 12" of topsoil so putting on any more than that is a waste plus if you put too much on at a time the water will start to run to the low areas more so than soak in evenly giving you wet and dry spots. If all else fails stick a shovel in the ground and see where the moisture is or isn't in the soil profile. If the root zone is dry you are probably not putting on enough, too many guys decide when to run based on how many days since they ran it last and not actual crop usage. We put on less early to try to keep the surface cool and slow down when we get ground coverage.
