Some thoughts in response to the comments already posted:

If the fire is beyond fighting with a 2 gallon water extinguisher, you are not going to save it anyway. At that point, it is simply a matter of increasing the salvage value. Where I am, the fire department will probably save the field. There is just not much chance they will get there in time to do any good on the combine unless they just happen to be driving by.

Franz, the fires commonly start in the engine compartment, which is a high air flow area. I would agree that there is little chance of removing air from that fire, it is going to have to be heat. The fuel supply is fairly limited at first but quickly gets out of hand as area plastic starts to go. Keep in mind that you are climbing a ladder over 100 gallons of diesel in a plastic tank when choosing to attack in the engine compartment....descretion is the better part of valor, you want to give up EASILY or at least have your mindset fixed on going onto the walker hood and off the opposite side or back across the auger to the cab to escape. I would most likely attack by going from the cab steps to the grain tank to hit the engine compartment from the front.

Our extinguishers are bungee corded to the step railing. Bungees wrap clear around, extinquisher will pull straight up out of them with not all that much effort. I've done it, it pops right out. A 9600 with extended ladder for duals has a piece of railing which cradles the extinguisher perfectly.
