Subject: RE: CRP Released in October 2016 question

17821x - 7/7/2016 13:47 I'm a long ways away in Iowa but have done expiring CRP several times. Corn always worked better than beans for me. Cut it October 1st and get it baled. If you don't need hay yourself sell it to someone that does. Standing expiring CRP sells for $40-$50 per acre in my area. After baling let it regrow a couple weeks and hit it with max rate of Roundup. Get soil tests now and apply any lime or K that is needed this fall. Save the P application for the spring to take advantage of the N in the DAP or MAP. Use a few gallons of 10-34-0 on the seed or 2x2 if possible. As for N rate treat it like corn on corn. Hardest part of no-tilling in killed sod is getting the slot closed so spiked or cast closers is a must. Will take lots of down pressure also. If you can do pop-up on the seed use Capture insecticide for secondary pests. Otherwise going Non-GMO would be a good option.

Much of this is good advice, however- I'd seriously consider the Roundup application before mowing.  It's a labeled application, it works well, and it would hedge you against the chance of getting an early frost and not enough regrowth to get a good kill on actively growing grass.
