Subject: RE: corn on corn

Here are what we find has worked well

Automated Down force control.
When we switched to air force with up and down and now delta force, we started raising higher yielding corn on corn than corn on beans. Corn ground is less forgiving to plant into no till. Soybean stubble feels like worked ground.

Planter banded N
We increase banded N by 40 units on corn-corn ground to 105. The previous corn crop residue causes a lot of early season N immobilization. Broadcasting N is a highly risky because of the maxim that the microbes eat first. Balance of N (85 units) applied by y drop at v7-v10

In Row nutrients
We always notice a tremendous yield difference when using our in row nutrients. Even greater in corn on corn.

Adjustable floating residue managers
We use floating martins with clean sweep. The Yetter air adjust work well too. The he key is adjust meant so you can put downforce to clean row in tough conditions.

I do like no till versus tillage. When you leave the residue on the surface, it is easier to manage than fighting root balls created during tillage. Plus being on the surface slows N tie up because less soil is in contact with the top residues. Tie up comes mostly from root decay.

Part of the yield increase is coming from previous chemicals. The ALS in the soybeans appears to affect corn. While when 2nd year corn previous herbicide was a corn herbicide.

Fred Belows work does indicate decreases with continuous corn. Therefore I am literally owing at the following rotation:
Corn, possibly non GMO if market
Cover crop
Corn, smart STX
Cover crop
Soybean, seed
Wheat, seed
Double crop soybean
Cover crop

Good luck.
