Southern Illinois | We have 6 bins, 3 with stirators and dryers, 1 with a dryer only and 2 with only fans. We have no problem storing grain that was harvested at any times at any temps as long as it is managed correctly. IMO, the key is to try to get it to a reasonably cool temperature using low humidity air and then trying to maintain that balance with the ambient air temperature. We usually run fans once every two week on wheat during the summer, usually on a windy day when the humidity is low in the evening. Corn and beans we try to pick a cool and low humidty free night and let them run till the next morning. Stirators are a pain the a$$ but they sure do give you some piece of mind when you can let them run for a day or 2 after the grain has been in there for 6 months and see everything is clean. I am also a big proponent of the smell test. Leave the bin closed for a few days with no fan running and then open up the top hatch. If it smells funny, get the fan running immediately or line up some trucks. | |
