Subject: green ash trees looking bad

east central ND
We have a lot of tree rows put in in the later 1950's. some Chinese elm, and other green ash. So the trees are mature, and 60 plus years old. A lot of the elms have died I think from old age, still have a couple ok looking rows left. But the green ash look like crap this year. Was thinking chemical damage from the last 10 years of roundup, but even a few green ash trees in the farm yard look the same. Hardly any leaves on the lower 3/4 of the trees, nice green leaves on top. We had that very cold frost that nipped some corn this spring, lows were in the mid 20's for several hours. The trees were mostly leafed out at the time. Could that nip off the lower leaves? Or are these trees at the end of there natural growing time? I was thinking I read they should be good for 70 years or better. Carragana and lilacs bushes in the tree rows look just fine. I was thinking of calling the extension agent to see if those ash bore bugs were in the area, but have not done that yet.
